How can we help?
Start with these common questions. SnapExport does not modify originals in Apple Photos. Version 1.1 adds longest-side and target-size settings for photos. If a resource is not ready or a conversion or share fails, follow the message to retry.
Frequently asked questions
Keep reliable backups of important media. A receiving app decides whether it accepts a particular group of photos or videos.
Which items remain original, and which are converted?
JPEG, PNG, and ordinary videos remain byte-for-byte original by default and do not use conversion allowance. Supported photos such as HEIC become JPEG. Live Photos become broadly compatible videos by default. For GIF, RAW, and other items with an available original, SnapExport first asks whether you want to keep the original. The review screen explains the actual action and count.
Does original export mean every platform can open the file?
No. Original export means SnapExport does not re-encode the file. Compatibility still depends on the format, operating system, and receiving app. Choose a compatible conversion when broader compatibility is needed.
How do I set photo dimensions and a target file size?
Expand Advanced Settings on the export review screen. Choose no longest-side limit, or 2048, 1600, or 1280 pixels. Larger photos are reduced proportionally, not upscaled. Enable target size to choose about 500 KB, 1 MB, or 2 MB per photo. Both limits are off by default and apply only to still photos being re-encoded, not original exports or videos.
Why does actual file size differ from the target or estimate?
A target is the size you would like to approach; an estimate is an approximate range based on photo information; actual size is measured after export. Photo content, dimensions, quality, and retained metadata all affect size. If a target cannot be reached, SnapExport keeps a result it can produce rather than promising an exact match. The re-encoded photo total on the result screen excludes original exports and videos.
Why did a JPEG stay the same size? Does removing location affect originals?
JPEGs are copied unchanged by default. Explicitly enable JPEG recompression to change quality, dimensions, or target size; this counts as a conversion item. Size and location-removal settings apply only to re-encoded photos, not original JPEG, PNG, video, or other original exports. Original files may retain existing location data.
How is the free allowance counted, and why are originals free?
Free users can complete 3 items requiring re-encoding per trusted rolling 24-hour period, including optional JPEG recompression, even if the file format stays the same. Copying an original does not re-encode it and does not use allowance. Unfinished conversions release their reservations; items completed before cancellation still count as successful results.
Why does allowance verification sometimes need a connection? Is media uploaded?
Because device time can be changed, SnapExport uses HTTPS trusted time when needed to confirm a 24-hour period. The request contains no photo, video, filename, location, or EXIF data. If checking fails, originals remain exportable and conversion items stay selected for retry. See the Privacy Policy.
Why does the App show “Getting original from iCloud” or fail to get an original?
- Apple system services must download iCloud-only originals to the device. Keep a connection; if a network error or timeout appears, reconnect and retry.
- Check free storage and allow access to selected photos when requested. An unavailable resource is not necessarily a conversion failure.
- Do not force-quit while originals are being fetched. After an interruption, reopen the App, check task status, and retry unfinished items as instructed. Continuous background processing is not guaranteed.
Why is Photos permission requested? Can I export without it?
The system picker lets you choose items first. Reading some originals or Live Photo resources may also require Photos library permission. The system provides read/write access, but SnapExport’s export flow uses it only to read selected media; it does not scan unselected photos or modify or delete originals. You can change permission in system settings. Without it, SnapExport still tries resources supplied by the picker; unavailable originals may require selecting again or granting access before retrying.
What happens to quality, sound, and HDR after conversion?
Photos become JPEGs using the Best Quality, Balanced, or Smaller File preset you choose. Live Photos become compatible videos with available original audio by default. The review screen may let you preserve HDR, but some receiving apps and displays cannot handle it. Conversion never modifies the original in Apple Photos.
How long are export results retained?
Completed outputs normally remain in SnapExport’s private cache for up to 24 hours so they can be previewed or shared again. You can clear them sooner in Recent Exports, and iOS may reclaim cache earlier. Copies saved to other apps or file locations are not affected.
What if I cancel sharing or a result file is no longer available?
Cancelling system sharing does not mean the export failed. You may share again while the files still exist. If temporary outputs were cleared or reclaimed, select the media and export again. Save important results promptly to Files or another reliable location.
Is SnapExport Pro a subscription? How do I restore it?
SnapExport Pro is a non-consumable one-time purchase with no monthly or annual renewal. Pro provides unlimited format conversion. Choose Restore Purchases on the Pro page while using the Apple Account that purchased it. The App Store controls price, currency, refunds, and regional availability.
How do I change the app language?
Open iOS Settings → Apps → SnapExport → Language and choose English, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, or Japanese. The system share sheet and third-party apps use their own language settings.
